Considers that, in view of the abuses which have occurred in the use of the support provided to the Member States from European Union sources, it would be appropriate to consider the possibility that accounts for aid could be accepted on the basis of an auditor’s report (opinion), irrespective of the threshold;

5c. Supports the Commission proposal that the audit role is one of statutory inspection wherein the appointment, remuneration and duration of the engagement would be the responsibility of a third party, perhaps a regulator, rather than the company itself.
