1. Acknowledges the importance of the tourism sector for the EU and its internal market, and stresses its potential as a driver of socio-economic growth and job creation; emphasises the need to pay particular attention to rural tourism as an engine for the sustainable growth of rural areas, and because of its contribution to creating jobs and establishing the population in the rural environment;

4. Recommends the creation of an EU online application containing European travel maps, which could help to promote Europe as a tourist destination and to improve the amount and quality of information available to consumers; calls for the establishment of common criteria for evaluating categories of hotel and rural establishment, evaluating their accessibility for people with reduced mobility, their energy efficiency, their ICT access and their establishment’s sustainability;

6. Stresses that the constant rise in the number of travellers calls for the development of more sustainable and energy-efficient means of travel and accommodation, in order to create environmentally and economically sustainable destinations; urges the Commission to accelerate the implementation of the Nearly Zero Energy Hotels (neZEH) initiative, in order to make hotels self-sustaining and energy-efficient; proposes the creation of an energy- innovation plan for the tourism sector that, as well as reducing costs and maximising resources, would generate innovative projects capable of creating new jobs, especially for young people, and the foundation of start-ups;

Stresses the need to design a strategy to increase accommodation sales in medium/low season that includes the rural tourism sector and that aims to overcome seasonality; highlights the importance of focusing the marketing of tourism products/services on quality, thereby building loyalty in visitors and positioning our sector in a highly competitive market;
