Whereas each year more than a million cattle and sheep are transported over the Mediterranean Sea from European ports to the Middle East and the discharge of manure and dead animals from the vessels into the Mediterranean Sea is an environmental problem and forbidden according to the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL 73/78);
