6. Considers that development assistance plays a crucial role in tackling the root causes of migration; stresses the need for continuous, practical EU support to international efforts towards poverty reduction, as well as to peace-building, promotion of democracy, human rights and fundamental freedoms, regional, political and economic stability, security and prosperity, through the setting-up of bilateral follow-up units in the countries concerned.
