1. Is convinced that the prevention of food losses has to be the very first priority of an EU bio-waste policy, from both an ethical and an environmental point of view, as food is a valuable and scarce resource and millions of people are suffering from hunger;

Points in this connection to Article 9 and Annex X of the new regulation on the provision of food information to consumers requiring labelling of the minimum durability and sell-by dates and instructions on special conditions of storage and use on packaging; calls on the Member States and the food industry to conduct information campaigns which will enable consumers to understand the labelling and correctly interpret the minimum durability dates in particular;
