Highlights the need to safeguard EU unity as a pre-condition to achieve the EU’s ambition of strategic sovereignty amid the increasing competition between the United States and ChinaUnderlines that preserving peace, stability and the freedom of navigation in the Indo-Pacific region remains of critical importance, also to the interests of the EU and its Member States; highlights the need to safeguard EU unity with regards to China as a pre-condition to achieve that; recalls that the EU’s unified approach must be underpinned by a pragmatic and principled foreign and security policy;

Welcomes the positive role Taiwan plays in fostering peace and security in the Indo-Pacific region; recalls, in the context of regional dynamics, the importance of trade and economic relations between the EU and Taiwan; stresses therefore the need to urgently begin an impact assessment, public consultation and scoping exercise on a Bilateral Investment Agreement (BIA) with the Taiwanese authorities in preparation for negotiations to deepen bilateral economic ties;
