OPINION on the EU’s role in protecting and restoring the world’s forests

A. whereas a sustainable and effective forest policy requires reliable information on forest resources, their condithe state of forests (adaptation to climate change and the spread of parasite infestation), and how they are managed and used, and also reliable information on land-use change; calls for the EU to support the monitoring of deforestation and forest degradation by using Earth observation data from different sources; whereas, in the light of the Covid-19 pandemic, a sustainable forestry policy is more than ever necessary; whereas deforestation, rampant urbanisation and industrialisation are now only leaving small areas of habitat for wild animal species, resulting in an increased probability of close and repeated contact with humans, and ultimately ‘passage across the species barrier’;
