People who suffer from both mental health and associated chronic conditions, such as chronic pain, depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, have substantially poorer physical health, increased risk of cancer and cardiovascular-related diseases, all contributing to lower life expectancy;

Understanding how brain diseases progress and finding treatments and cures for these diseases is a long-term endeavour; brain research and innovation must therefore be considered as a health and research priority in the EU and facilitated to address the root causes and challenges of brain disorders and apply research models, including the use of animals as well as complementary models that should be maintained, while also fostering the use of advanced technologies such as modern neuroscience tools, molecular, physiological and imaging approaches, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data science;
