Stresses the fact that the European Union should take a leading role in formulating a common approach and promoting coordination between Member States; is convinced that an important European added value can be provided in fields such as consumer information, nutritional education, the development of European indicators such as waist size and any other risk factor relating to obesity (especially abdominal), media advertising, agricultural production and food labelling;

30. Welcomes the inclusion of ‘diabetes and obesity’ as a priority within the 7th Framework Programme dedicated to health, since diabetes is a chronic illness frequently associated with obesity, especially abdominal obesity;
