Paragraph 1
Paragraph 1
1. Urges the Commission to take the European Parliament’s proposals into account and to propose a definition of the blue economy that covers all existing or future production and employment at sea, as well as the onshore ramifications thereof; calls on the Commission to draw up an non-exhaustive, inclusive list that covers, as a minimum, the following activities: fisheries, shipbuilding, renewable marine energy, seabed mining, marine biotechnology, seaweed farming, fish farming, shellfish farming, coastal and maritime tourism, the development of offshore platforms and shipping; , shipping, the cleaning up of the sea and port areas, undersea pipeline and cable burial, and seawater desalination; (The activities added above create jobs and some of them can alter the quality of the maritime environment. Boyan Slat’s proposal for cleaning up the seas is promising in this regard. The idea is to use the sea’s currents to channel plastic waste into a kind of giant funnel floating on the surface and then extract the waste from the water. Similarly, the seawater desalination sector continues to grow strongly. However, we still need to find an industrial use for the brines that flow back into the sea from desalination plants, as these are harmful for the ecosystem and the fishing industry. Finally, the burying of cables and oil pipelines is a booming business whose environmental impact should be tightly controlled.)
