Notes the Commission’s proposal to establish a common EU list of safe countries of origin; demands that all appropriate steps be taken to ensure that this approach is consistent with the principle of non-refoulement and that the rights of women, children and other vulnerable groups are not undermined; calls for gender differentiation to be applied; believes that claims based on fear of gender-based violence or discrimination should never be subject to accelerated asylum procedures, and points out that a victim of gender violence does not regard her own country as being safe even if it is on the Commission’s list; believes that proper attention should be paid to claims based on fear of gender-based violence or discrimination in order to avoid hasty decisions which do not take due account of the dangers, and even the threat of death, facing women who have suffered gender-based violence if their application is rejected and they are forced to return to their own country;
