3. Deeply regrets that, despite the efforts of the EU and its Member States, the EU’s objective of reducing gross tropical deforestation by 50 % by 2020 is unlikely to be met, and therefore strongly supports the Commission in its proposal to step up action in protecting and restoring the world’s forests; points out that deforestation deprives of their habitats animal species carrying viruses and bacteria, driving them towards areas inhabited by human beings and increasing the risk of cross-species transmission of dangerous diseases;
