Calls on the Commission to establish updated and standard rules that facilitate product safety in compliance with the Regulation on European Standardisation and national, European and international standards, in its forthcoming revision of the General Product Safety Directive and a future regulation on European market surveillance to introduce safety by design as a common rule for products, to improve the enforcement on non- compliance with Union legislation on product safety and market surveillance, to establish a Common European Accident Database covering accidents and hazardous situations coupled with the product category in question, establishing control at source for products from third countries;

9. Calls for the application of the precautionary principle in the markets for consumer goods produced, for example when using nanotechnology or genetically modified organisms, in order to protect consumers against cocktails effects stemming from dangerous substances in products;

Stresses that the quickening process of business concentration affects both the production and marketing of goods and services, and suggests that consumers should hold at least 20% of democratically elected posts obe better involved in the management of boards of large companies, including those in the financial sector;
