Points out that during the 2005-2009 reporting period the number of animals transported increased significantly: cattle by 8 %, pigs by 70 %, sheep by 3 %, and only with horses was thereshowing a decrease of 17 %. The aim set out in Recital 5 of Council Regulation (EC) No 1/2005, namely that ‘for reasons of animal welfare the transport of animals over long journeys, including animals for slaughter, should be limited to the greatest extent possible’ has therefore not been achieved;Underlines that two thirds of consignments concern transports of less than 8 hours, while 4% of transports are longer than the maximum journey time and thus require offloading and resting before continuing the journey. Regrets that for nearly 2% of consignments journey time was not available: a more than five-fold increase compared to 2005,

Welcomes the improvement in the quality of animal transport, but believes that the Commission findings referred to above are based on the results of surveys carried out among slaughterhouses and business and transport enterprises engaged in the transportation of live animals. The results of the surveys carried out by the Commission may therefore not fully reflect the actual state of affairsIs aware of the considerable investments made by many transporters under difficult economic conditions and welcomes the improvement in the quality of animal transport noted in the Commission report, but regrets that the Commission findings lack sufficient reliable data;
