1. Requests the Commission to submit to Parliament by 31 December 2009, on the basis of Article 141 of the EC Treaty, a legislative proposal on the revision of the existing legislation relating to the application of the principle of equal pay for men and women, following the detailed recommendations below, enlarging upon the comprehensive European rules on protection against gender-specific pay discrimination on the basis of Article 141 of the EC Treaty, to examine the diverse causes of pay differences and to prompt targeted measures in Member States to eliminate the factors referred to, including women's child-related employment breaks, differing occupational choices and short working times, which, above all, requires greater compatibility between family life and working life; stresses that, in addition, women in particular must be encouraged to make use of their career opportunities in scientific and engineering fields, too, in order to open up greater earnings potential;
