Stresses that energy recovery from biowastediverting biowaste from landfills needs to be increased in the EU,; notes that biowaste could contributinge to the EU 20:20:20% renewable energy targets by 2020 and also those set in the EU Biofuels Directive and the EU Fuel Quality Directive; recalls that the Renewables Directive supports the use of all types of biomass, including biowaste for energy purposes, as a renewable source of energy; calls, therefore, on Member States to consider energy recovery from the biodegradable parts of waste in their national legislation as part of an integrated waste hierarchy policy and urges them to share best practice ideas;

Calls on Member States to establish legally binding separate collection schemes for biowaste, biological treatment of biowaste and reuse of compost with strict quality standards for compost, in view of the significant potential of compost and fermentation residues to contribute to soil protection and improvement, substitute for mineral fertilizers and add to climate protection; invites them to outline how biowaste can contribute to exploiting the potential of existing biomass resources taking into account their specific geographic and climatic conditions;
