Recalls that the EU geographical indications system differentiates between two types of protected names: protected designation of origin (PDO) and protected geographical indication (PGI); points out that these descriptions are confusing for consumers, as they do not show clearly what the difference between them is; therefore proposes clearer indicators enabling consumers to see how the protected names differentiate in terms of the degree and the kind of relationship which exists between a product and a geographical region;

Is concerned by recent press releases which report inappropriate and abusive use of protected geographical indications by some third countries; asks the Commission to take active measures to protect products registered under the Union geographical indications scheme also in an international trading context and to work on respective agreements with third countries;
