A. whereas the Alpine Region is one of the most dynamic, innovative and competitive regions in Europe, and has unique geographical and natural featuremacro-region (EUSALP), which has a population of 70 million and covers seven countries, has unique geographical and natural features and is one of the most dynamic, innovative and competitive regions in Europe; whereas EUSALP plays a key role in the production of common goods and strategic resources such as water and energy; whereas the area still has a number of structural problems, and whereas all available resources and a bottom-up approach involving all levels of government will need to be brought to bear in order to resolve those problems;

B. whereas specific answers need to be found to the problemsthe Alpine macro-region (EUSALP) is a heterogeneous area made up of complex local systems capable of generating targeted social, economic and cultural responses to specific problems including a shortage of globcalisation, the ageing population, ‘brain drain’ amenities such as schools and hospitals, demographic issues, climate change, large- scale natural hazards, the energy challenge, and seasonal fluctuations and multiple jobs, which can be solved only if all available resources are brought to bear;

Calls for transport connectivity within the region and with the rest of Europe to be made more durable and for intermodal transport systems to be encouraged for the sake of the region’s devehought to be given to forging links between urban and rural areas as a means of fostering the development of mountain areas; calls for spatial development policies for the Alpine macro-region to focus on consolidating sustainable links between urban and rural areas, improving transport connectivity within the region and with the rest of Europe by promoting intermodal transport systems, boosting competitiveness and emplopyment and ensuring the well-being of its inhabitants;
