Details

The European Parliament adopted by 428 votes to 10, with 6 abstentions, a legislative resolution on the proposal for a directive of the European Parliament and of the Council on the approximation of the laws of the Member States relating to units of measurement (codified text).

Parliament adopted its position at first reading, under the ordinary legislative procedure, taking over the Commission proposal.

According to the Consultative Working Party of the legal services of the European Parliament, the Council and the Commission, the proposal in question contains a straightforward codification of the existing texts without any change in their substance.

Details

The Committee on Legal Affairs adopted the report drafted by Sajjad KARIM (ECR, UK) on the proposal for a directive of the European Parliament and of the Council on the approximation of the laws of the Member States relating to units of measurement (codified text).

It recommended that the European Parliament’s position adopted at first reading, under the ordinary legislative procedure, should be to take over the Commission proposal as adapted to the recommendations of the Consultative Working Party of the legal services of the European Parliament, the Council and the Commission.

Details

PURPOSE: to codify Council Directive 80/181/EEC on the approximation of the laws of the Member States relating to units of measurement.

LEGAL BASE: Article 114 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union.

CONTENT: the purpose of this proposal is to undertake the codification of Council Directive 81/181/EEC of 20 December 1979 on the approximation of the laws of the Member States relating to units of measurement and on the repeal of Directive 71/354/EEC .

The new Directive will supersede the various acts incorporated in it. This proposal fully preserves the content of the acts being codified and hence does no more than bring them together with only such formal amendments as are required by the codification exercise itself.

FINANCIAL IMPLICATION: this proposal has no implication for the EU budget.
