Notes that climate change, insect damage and forest fires are natural events that are currently putting great pressure on the development of forests globally; points out that forests not only provide a unique space for recovery, but also bind carbon dioxide (CO2), protect the soil, filter our drinking water and are a sustainable source of wood, a valuable raw material both for further processing and for energy generation; stresses that forests provide the basis for jobs and incomes, especially in rural areas, and that they are a vital habitat for many animal and plant species worldwide, thus contributing significantly to the protection of biodiversity;
