Studied at the Academy for Economics and Political Science 1949-1951; then trainee in the steel industry. Appointed General Secretary of IG-Bergbau (mining trade union) 1952. Board member 1960 and Vice-Chairman of Mining and Energy Trade Union (IG-Bergbau und Energie) 1964. Chairman of the German Federation of Trade Unions (DGB) 1969-1982.
  • Member of the SPD 1952.
  • Vice-President of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) 1969. President of the European Confederation of Free Trade Unions 1970. Vice-president (1973) and President (1974-1979) of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC).
