  • After passing the secondary school-leaving examination, studied Romance language and literature, English language and literature and social sciences at the universities of Freiburg, Munich, London and Paris. Taught as assistant at an Orleans secondary school for a year. Passed first state examination and second state examination (1968). Master of Arts 1969; doctorate 1973. After passing second state examination, engaged in youth work in Washington State (USA) and later as development helper in Mexico and Malawi. Secondary teacher since 1969.
  • Executive committee member and Chairman of the North Rhine-Westphalian Land Council of Women 1978-1984. NGO representative for UNICEF since 1978. Executive committee member (since 1982) and President (since 1984) of the International Association of Catholic Secondary Teachers (SIESC).
