    After obtaining his higher middle school diploma he moved to Rome and started his trade union career at the Rome branch of the INCA (National Confederal Assistance Institute).

    He became a member of the provincial secretariat of FIOM in Rome and thus increased his knowledge of the 'Metalmeccanici' trade union, becoming a member of the central organising office of the FIOM (Federation of mechanical engineering workers) of CGIL (1968). Member of the national secretariat (1974) and assistant National Secretary (1977) of the FIOM; assistant National Secretary of CGIL (1983). Secretary of the PSI - Italian Socialist Party (1993).
