  • Member of Rome City Council (1976-1981). Member of the Italian Parliament since 1987. Member of the National Secretariat of the PCI-PDS (1988-1992). Among the founders of the PDS (Party of the Democratic Left).
  • Editor of the daily newspaper 'L'Unità' (1992-1996).
  • In the first Prodi government (1996-1998), Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Cultural Heritage, Performing Arts and Sport.
  • Since 6 November 1998, Political Secretary of the PDS and Member of the PSE Bureau.
  • In November 1999, elected Vice-President of the Socialist International at its Paris conference.
  • Mayor of Rome since June 2001.
  • Executive Vice-President of the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (since May 2003).
  • Has published a number of books, including ‘Il sogno spezzato’ (on Robert Kennedy and his thought), ‘La sfida interrotta’ (on the ideas of Enrico Berlinguer), ‘Forse Dio è malato’ (a travel book on Africa), and ‘Il disco del mondo – Vita breve di Luca Flores, musicista’.
