- In November 2014 waived his claim to the transitional end-of-service allowance due to him as a former Vice-President of the Commission; this allowance amounted to some EUR 13 000 per month for three years – a total of EUR 468 000 – which he made a ‘moral choice’ to forego.
- Over 20 years’ participation in voluntary activities for the ‘In Dialogo’ Community working in Trivigliano (FR) on the rehabilitation and social reintegration of young drug addicts. Since 2018, his pension as a former Vice-President of the European Commission has gone to this organisation.
